Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices

Ruriko Yoshida · 2021

Solving a system of linear equations appears in many problems in academic and non-academic disciplines since this is one of the simplest and most effective models to solve practical problems in many areas. The working example is a two-way contingency table from categorical data analysis, a classic form of analysis from statistics. Categorical data analysis is one of classical statistical analysis and the example is called a two-way contingency table from categorical data analysis. The chapter uses one of the most classical problems in optimization, called the "transportation problem." Per its name, authors are trying to allocate transportation of goods (supplies) to other locations according to the demand for those goods. In this working example, the author uses a Guinness data set. A system of linear equations can be written as a matrix. It is easy to visualize and using matrix operations, one can solve a system of linear equations.
