Blockchain technology has been gaining great importance in recent years owing to its private, reliable, secure and trustworthy information exchange among peer entities. This technology has been increasingly used in numerous applications such as financial services, remote sensing, food science, internet of things, brain research and healthcare industry. Data immutability, transparency and decentralization nature of blockchain attracts the researchers to make use of this technology in various fields. Healthcare records contain confidential patient data that needs to be stored in secure manner. Blockchain technology considerably plays a vital role in maintaining the confidentiality of medical data. Also, blockchain provides effective and secure data sharing which results in effective diagnosis and treatment. This paper highlights the development of blockchain applications in healthcare system and its challenges.
