Standardization," wrote Norman F. Harriman in Standards and Standardization, a reference work published by McGraw-Hill in 1928, "in a sense is the bedrock of civilization." Harriman, a member of ASME and the National Bureau of Standards, expressed astonishment that the subject of standardization, in spite of its major importance, had been overlooked by editors and had been largely addressed only in the recorded documents of technical associations.
