Kim, Young-roung. 1998. The Role of Checking and Its Problems in English Grammar. Linguistics, 6-1, 293-309. This paper purposes to study the role of a feature-checking theory in English grammar. I am to study the role that the checking theory plays in the syntactic structure of English. Within the framework of a feature-checking theory, there are three different sets of grammatical features^l : head features, specifier-features, and complement features2. When there is compatability between checker and checked in respect of a given feature, the relevant specifier-or complement-feature is erased, because specifier-and complement-features are uninterpretable at LF, and the corresponding head-feature is erased if purely formal and so uninterpretable. I am to examine and analyze how checking plays a role in English grammar and to argue that some problems arise concerning a feature-checking consistency. (Woosuk University)
