18 The broad use of RPA based on three practical cases

Adina Stenzel, Konstantin Ritschel, Christoph Stummer · 2021

In this chapter the IT and management consultancy Detecon describes three real-world RPA cases, including determining the need for automation, implementation and challenges, and client benefits. It provides lessons learned for assessing business processes and using RPA-based solutions to optimize manual, outdated, or insufficient processes. The first case deals with an efficiency increase in the daily business of the public sector. A monthly database extraction is performed automatically to validate personal data entries with an external database. The clients focus was an increase of efficiency in the business process using RPA, which also resulted in higher motivation of the employees. The second case demonstrates the temporary use of RPA to achieve a businesscritical project goal in the telecommunications industry. The goal was to migrate ISDN products to IP technology for large corporate clients in a short period of time. The challenge was to manage and transfer a great amount of data to shut down expensive legacy systems. Thus, the project goal was efficiently achieved with the use of RPA. The third case illustrates security measures in the daily business of the telecommunications industry by demonstrating the enabling capabilities of RPA towards business processes. It supports the management of firewalls to protect a sensitive technical customer base from external interferences. The robot creates transparency about the network load and reports events, e. g., network attacks to an employee. Therefore, RPA supports optimal network utilization and improved security settings. The reader shall receive practical insight from the three cases presented. The chapter shows in which scenarios RPA can be used, how RPA can be implemented, and the lessons learned. The reader can take these recommendations into account in a future RPA project to avoid common mistakes in practice.
