We have presented a Virtual Personal Area Network (VPAN) system which enables direct communication with PAN devices in remote locations. This paper realizes an integration PANs with different standards and locations by upgrading VPAN middleware to support ZigBee in addition to Bluetooth. We implemented a prototype of VPAN middleware for Bluetooth and ZigBee and confirmed its operation with an Android smartphone. The results showed that PANs of different standards scattered in remote locations can be integrated, and users can communicate with a remote PAN using the same procedure as that for a general PAN, regardless of their location.
