With the improvement of the quality of machine translation (MT for short), the use of machine translation has become ubiquitous in real life. Within translation studies, MT has long been viewed as an aid to translation per se and the focus of MT research has been the development of translation system and the improvement of translation quality. Information literacy which entails the use of MT, for example, has been investigated as part of translator’s competence (Pinto and Sales, 2007). Comparatively speaking, the use of MT as part of global researcher’s information literacy has wider social and cultural implications but has received little attention from translation academia. The increasing exchange of global scholarship and the pervasive use of MT call for the integration of MT and global research.
