Based on Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman(1999)"s classification, this study developed a new classification of if-clauses, including 3 semantic types and 8 specific usages. Using the classification, a total of 300 if-clauses were analysed, with respective 150 in spoken English and written English. The results showed that Type 1(First/Future conditional), Type 2(Second/Present conditional), and Type 3(Third/Past conditional) were used in only 24.3% of the total 300 sentences, and that "Zero conditional" appeared in 32.7%. This indicates that the usage representing "Zero conditional" is used more frequently than those corresponding to Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 presented in the ESL/EFL textbooks. Based on these results, the study suggests that English grammar books in Korea should deal with "Zero conditional" in addition to Type 1, Tye 2, and Type 3 under the heading of "Conditionals" not "Subjunctive." Further, ESL/EFL grammar books are required to include the usages of "Truth, habit, implicit inference about the present" and "Weakened condition and/or result." #conditionals #corpus #if-clauses #semantic types #usages 1. 서론2. if절의 용법3. 자료 분석4. 결과 및 논의5. 결론References
