Current Status of RFI Predictions in Electronic Systems Containing Semiconductor Devices

V. G. Puglielli · 1979

It is widely recognized that electronic systems which are not specifically designed to operate at radio- and microwave frequencies can and sometimes do respond at those frequencies. The prevention of undesirable RF-induced responses imposes the requirements of: (1) predicting RFI effects in electronic systems, and (2) taking appropriate measures in the design of such systems to mitigate these effects. This paper is an overview of some of the basic approaches currently being pursued to predict RFI effects in electronic systems containing semiconductor discrete and integrated circuit devices. In theory, any nonlinear device can exhibit a spurious response to RF or microwave energy. However, some semiconductor devices are particularly sensitive because of their small size, high speed, and low operating signal levels. Moreover, trends to smaller, faster devices with lower signal levels, and the proliferation of RF sources should dictate that more attention be given to this area.
