Testing and Verification

The most obvious test that can be done on a program is a check to see that it correctly performs its intended function. Since a program is useless if it solves the wrong problem, this is the first step in the testing/verification process. When a program has been written, debugged, and found satisfactory by the programmer, the process of testing and verification begins. Although it is much like debugging, testing differs in the type of problems that are solved. When a program is ready to undergo testing, the programmer feels that it is operating correctly according to his interpretation of the specification.
