Contrast as Compression of Information

Mariusz Stanowski · 2021

In previous chapters, we have shown that contrast is the cause of aesthetic attractiveness, and that it can be equated with complexity. Now we will combine this knowledge with the physical sphere of our mind. It turns out that the complexity of objects affects the energy of their perception. The greater the complexity of the object, the more energy our mind saves for its perception (the same amount of perceived information requires less energy during the perception of more complex objects ). In Section 6.2, “Perceptual Analysis of Contrast”, we will distinguish between mental contrast (analyzed earlier) and physical contrast (identified with physical strength) and explain how contrast is affected by the number of perceived features (of objects) and how by their strength. We will also explain what the essential difference between beauty and art is.
