Using Story Grammar to Assess Reading Comprehension.

In the past few years much has been written about story grammar. A story grammar is simply the description of typical elements found frequently in stories. These elements have been described similarly by Mandler and Johnson (1977), Rumelhart (1975), Stein and Glenn (1979), and Thorndyke (1977). For stories from Western cultures, the elements are 1. Stories are made of a theme and a plot. 2. The plot is made of an episode or series of episodes. 3. A complete espisode contains a setting and a series of events. 4. The setting describes time, place, and the central character. 5. The series of events include: a. an initiating event that sets a goal or problem,
