internal structure, and lateral s wh ich are no t expandable.Th e open qu estion is wh ether the nucleus shoul d be reagrded as a separate level, in th is case between the wo rd and the phrase. In favour of the set ting up of such a level, it can be stated that the structure of the expanded nucleus cannot be paralleled elsewhere in the language, as can the struc ture of an included clause for example.Nor do its con stituent un its appear elsewhere in the language. On the other hand, string consti tuent analys is does not necessarily re quire that all the beads in a string be the same si ze or shap e, nor that al l the laterals to a nucleus should have the same in tensity of relationship. It is demon strated here that certain items wi th in the nucl eus stand in a subordinate relationship to th eir head, the noun, and that certain items outside the nucl eus stand in a subordinate relationship to the nucl eus as such, even wh en it is manifested by one of the nuclear sub ordinates in isolation, wi thout its noun head.Al though thi s is a paper ab out syntac tic structure, at several points semantic sub-group ings of a particular construc tion are dis cussed, in order to reveal and ampli fy the meaning of th e construc tion. This is done wi thou t ap ology, as discreteness of semantics and struc ture is at this point impossible, and adherence to it too limi ting of the struc tural description.0. 2
