Packets consist of payload and header. In many applications and services, the payload is smaller or equal to the size of header as in Voice Over IP (VOIP) and messaging. It is advantageous to compress header so that data overhead is reduced. Packets travelling from source to destination encounter different delays in each node, thus increasing end-to-end delay. Delays encountered in the nodes can be categorized as fixed delay component and variable delay component. Fixed delay component may consist of transmission and propagation delay, while variable delay component consists of queuing delay and processing delay at the nodes. Many studies have been done to minimize several components of delay. In this paper, the header compression with uncompressed header is compared for variable delay components at nodes. The simulation results showed that there is reduction of queueing and processing delay in compressed header as compared to uncompressed header at the nodes.
