The development of an image processing language (IPL) is at best a series of compromises. When one considers the needs of a commercial IPL the task becomes just that much more difficult. Some of the steps we have explored are (1) implementing a multi-tiered language to assist in serving the large range of abilities that the users bring, (2) the use of a reduced instruction set language to try and keep the basic learning time at a minimum, (3) clearly defining the assumptions that were made in order to maintain ease of use and language flexibility (as well as giving methods on how to circumvent these assumptions), and (4) completing the project under the constraints of time, money and manpower.
