Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)

Martin Sauter · 2017

This chapter discusses the architecture of the Global System for Mobile Communications, which also forms the basis for the packet-switched extension called General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), and Long-Term Evolution (LTE). GSM, for the first time, set a common standard for Europe for wireless networks. Due to its success it was later adopted around the globe. Due to the global success of GSM, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was later founded as a global organization and European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) became one of the regional standardization bodies of the project. The chapter then discusses transmission speeds, signaling system number 7, GSM subsystems, voice processing, mobility management, call control, mobile device, subscriber identity module (SIM) card and Customised Applications for Mobile Network Enhanced Logic (CAMEL).
