Domain analysis: from art form to engineering discipline

Guillermo Arango · ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes · 1989

A precondition for reusability in software development is the existanca of reusable resources. There is a lack of system&c methods for productfng reusable information.Within tha Vausa communiy.there is belief that dcmain an@vsis will fadlitata the ldentifi~~ and capture of reusable abstractIons for rasbicted classes of applications. This belief is grounded on suo~~6ful expariancas a~~ductad by soma vary capable indbiiuals. However, for domain analysis to become a practical technology we need: 1) to understand the conceptual foundations of the procass; 2) to produce an unambiguous definition in the form of specifica tecbnigues; and, 3) to provide adequab support tools. In this paper we advance a oonmptual framework. We do not offer a datailad, cannonical scheme of how evwry type of domain analysis is or ought to b done.Wo have identified a set of pinGpIes providing coherence to a diverse sat of findings abwt domain analysis.Within his framework we have explored techniguas for practical domain analysis. The framework is useful for comparing batwaan different approachas to domain analysis, and can be used as guidance in developing other instances of memods and representations. Keywords: rausabilily.reuse
