Experiencing Narrow Phonetic Transcription
Andrea Caban, Julie Foh, Jeffrey Parker · 2021
Module Twelve , Experiencing Narrow Transcription , introduces readers to diacritics for narrow transcription. A select number of diacritics are defined and practiced within the module. Readers are encouraged to further investigate diacritics not covered in this module and how to use them in transcription. Diacritics covered include vowel modification diacritics (lowering, raising, fronting, backing, mid-centralizing, and centralizing). The concept and symbol for rhoticity is introduced. Consonant diacritics include dentalization, voicing, and release diacritics, among others. The module culminates in readers being asked to create one more version of their secret language sample transcription, this time transcribing as narrowly as possible using the tools of diacritics.
