Facial Recognition: A Biometric For The Fight Against Check Fraud

Gary S. Reynolds · 2006

While facial recognition technology holds promise for solving many identification/authentication problems, its use has been limited to known populations where individuals are identified, enrolled, and assigned a personal identification number. Because the technology is now more robust, this study examined the feasibility of using it to mitigate over the counter check fraud. It explored the use of facial recognition technology in a novel application, integrating it in into a fraud management program. Facial recognition technology was installed at fifteen bank branches to test its reliability in identifying persons on a watch list and a control group. Three groups were used: fraudsters, bank robbers, and a control group of participants. The results indicate that facial recognition systems have the potential for reducing fraud in these transactions, but several obstacles must be researched and overcome.
