Interactive terrain navigation and visualization is a challenging field that had been widely adopted in geographical information system (GIS), virtual reality, battlefield simulation, multi-platform games and other related real-time applications. According to the capabilities of recent physical memory and graphic hardware, there are some problems to preserve interactive frame rate and higher visual fidelity continuously with large scale of datasets need to be encountered. Therefore, a number of terrain rendering optimization techniques has been proposed and developed for last few years for reducing the problem complexity. Typically, it envelops the view-dependent level of detail management, visibility culling, cracks elimination and geomorphing. In this paper, a survey on existing real-time terrain rendering techniques has been made and then the comparison for each technique is reviewed and evaluated. The combination of all metrics in terrain optimization technique will be adapted and implemented in our on-going development of Interactive Computer Simulation Virtual Geographic Information System (ICSVGIS).
