Operations with Whole Numbers: Addition and Subtraction

This chapter provides suggestions for developing students&s; conceptual understanding by providing explicit strategies and systematically linking concrete and visual representations to the abstract algorithms used when computing whole numbers. The following recommendations are provided for intensifying instruction during interventions: 1) use systematic instruction, 2) use explicit instruction, 3) give students a list of steps to follow, 4) follow the CPA continuum, 5) use precise academic language, and 6) have students explain their reasoning.
