Building Physical Networks for an Intent-Driven Campus Network

Ningguo Shen, Bin Yu, Mingxiang Huang, Hailin Xu · 2021

An ultra-broadband physical network is crucial to an intent-driven campus network to eliminate limitations such as low bandwidth and high latency when planning and deploying virtual networks on top of the physical network. Therefore, the oversubscription ratio between layers on a campus network must be reduced or even 1:1, requiring that the physical network for a campus network supports ultra-broadband forwarding. The ultra-broadband forwarding rate of wired networks fundamentally complies with the Ethernet evolution rule. At the same time, wireless access technologies are also developing rapidly and the continuous evolution of Wi-Fi standards results in a surge in the air interface rate from the initial 2 Mbit/s to nearly 10 Gbit/s. However, ultra-broadband coverage on the physical network is faced with another challenge, that is, connecting IoT terminals to campus networks. A wired backbone network involves transmission over long distances and requires a high transmission rate.
