As Myanmar (Burmese) and Japanese sharesimilar syntactic structures, we explore an approachfor parsing Myanmar by using Japaneseas a pivot. Specifically, we first apply a statisticalmachines translation (SMT) system to translateMyanmar sentences into Japanese, and thenwe parse the Japanese translations. Finally, theJapanese syntactic structures are mapped to theoriginal Myanmar sentences. As a state-of-theartSMT system performs well on translatingsyntactically-similar languages and the parsingtechniques for Japanese have been well-studied,we have satisfactory results in experiments.
