A copyright ‘human-centred approach’ to AI?

The European Parliament (EP) resolution of 20 October 2020 on intellectual property rights for the development of artificial intelligence technologies argues for the need of ‘a human-centred approach to AI that is compliant with ethical principles and human rights’ (para. E). What does this mean in the field of copyright? While the resolution addresses a myriad of topics, this editorial will focus on the protection of AI-generated inventions, the use of copyrighted works to feed algorithms that produce works, and the declared preference for an EU regulation over directives to achieve the desired goals.
