V.P. Maslov’s Approach to the Analysis of Rank Distributions

Abstract Theoretical results of V.P. Maslov are applied in a new way to analyze empirical data in weakly formalized areas of human activity. The Maslov approach is used to solve the data clustering based on the behavior of rank distribution parameters. The updated Maslov law for rank distributions is used for the semiotic analysis of a computer language and for establishing the fact of its linguistic balance. Using Maslov‘s idea about virtual texts, we carry out a parametrization of the frequency dictionary of the Russian criminal code and a rank analysis of its change in time.
