Acquiring a Semantic Lexicon for Natural Language Processing

Paola Velardi · Psychology Press eBooks · 2021

This chapter explores the possibility of acquiring semantic information for natural language processing using on-line corpora. Our viewpoint is a very practical one: What kind of information can be usefully and extensively encoded on a semantic lexicon, for the purpose of NLP applications such as automatic translation, intelligent information retrieval, etc.? Several meaning representation frameworks presented in the literature are evaluated under this perspective. Methods for knowledge extraction from available on-line resources, as for example corpora, dictionaries and query collections are then examined.
