Cloud Computing for Big Data

Jawwad Ahmed Shamsi, Muhammad Ali Khojaye · 2021

Cloud computing provides an important platform for big data systems. It provides scalability and elasticity, while supporting multi-tenancy. A cloud could provide different types of service models such as IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), SaaS (Software as a Service), CaaS (Container as a Service), and FaaS (Function as a Service). Cloud could be deployed in three ways: public, private, and hybrid. It could also incorporate different levels of virtualization. Processor virtualization is implemented through hardware-assisted virtualization techniques. Earlier efforts to provide processor virtualization include full virtualization or paravirtualization. In a data center, a virtual machine could be migrated from one physical machine to another to achieve goals of virtualization. OS based virtualization (also known as containerization) can also be used in a cloud. This provides a lighter model at a higher level of abstraction. Fog and edge computing are an emerging phenomenon in cloud computing which reduces latency for cloud-based applications.
