Orthogonal Functions Used in the Solution of Linear Difference Problems

Stanley U. Benscoter · Journal of Applied Mechanics · 1946

Abstract A method of solution of linear difference equations is presented in which the solution is assumed in terms of a finite set of orthogonal functions which satisfy the boundary conditions. A formula for the latent roots of the matrix of the system of equations is obtained. A simple formula is then derived for the reciprocal matrix in terms of the latent roots and latent vectors. A simple numerical example is presented.
