Network Management and Control

The MIT Press eBooks · 2018

One requirement for a future internet that I listed in chapter 4 was that it do a better job of dealing with network management and control, which has been a weak aspect of the Internet from the beginning. There is less research concerning network management than there is about forwarding of data, so this chapter, while dealing with technology, is a bit more speculative. The most general conclusion I draw about architecture is that a design based on strict layering is not the best approach to modularity from the perspective of management and control. I suspect this conclusion will be controversial.
