Repair Pipelining for Clay-Coded Storage

Krishna Rajendram Bashyam · 2021

Clay codes are a class of MSR codes which use pairwise coupling across multiple layers of any MDS code to provide low storage overhead, uniform performance for repairing both data and parity nodes and optimality with respect to repair bandwidth, sub-packetization and disk I/O. Repair pipelining is a technique to speed up repair performance in general erasure-coded storage. The repair time is reduced to approximately the same as normal read time by pipelining, using small-sized units across storage nodes. In this paper, we extend the concept of repair pipelining to Clay codes by utilizing the sub-packetization attribute of Clay codes to improve the performance, bandwidth utilization and obtain better repair times for node failures in distributed storage systems.
