Getting into Place/Space

Laurie Radford · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2020

The object of the activities outlined in this chapter is to experience the character and quality of the sound itself such as its pitch, duration, shape, gesture, timbre, and emotive impact. The following activities (Listening to Space, Writing Space, Capturing Space, and Thinking Space) explore some aspects of space that are important to embrace in music-making and provide exercises for a music and sound pedagogy that consider the “spatial” in music and sound art. Undergraduate and graduate students can become more comfortable with the basics of recording and working with a DAW while also developing an understanding of the role acoustic space plays in the recording process.
