The IoT is providing unlimited opportunities in important sectors, including education, health care, and transportation. This rapid spread of IoT devices among consumers is combined with increased security concerns. With about thirty billion IoT connected devices that can be utilized by hackers to launch attacks, the exposure of personal information is becoming an urgent security concern. More devices are connected to the IoT system, using different communication technologies, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; however, security configurations on some of these new devices might be lacking or outdated. With the expansion of IoT systems, more data originating from outside devices will travel over a network, which makes authentication a crucial need for network security. In this chapter, we discuss IoT security challenges and present current techniques and security models. Moreover, we propose a secure authorization model for IoT architectures. The model can be used to authorize users securely on many IoT components in different applications. The proposed model is implemented in the Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud platform, using an IoT environment that allows users to set up and test real and virtual IoT devices. We address the health care domain as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model.
