The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm and its application in our daily lives is remarkable. Ubiquitous computing is one of the areas leading toward the IoT. The basic idea of ubiquitous computing is to embed computational capabilities into objects, to enable them to communicate and perform tasks effectively without any interaction with computers. On the other hand, the IoT extends internet connectivity to a diverse range of everyday things that are enabled with embedded technology for communicating with the external environment. Despite some challenges, the evolution of the IoT has made the dream of pervasive computing come true. This chapter propounds the fundamental concepts of ubiquitous computing and the IoT and analyzes the potential of the IoT as a way forward to ubiquitous computing. The challenges and issues associated with IoT security and the role of blockchain are also discussed. The chapter further covers some of the areas where this combination is applied.
