Revealing Data in Science: Using and Teaching About Data-Based Graphics for Analysis and Display

Anne E. Egger, Anthony Carpi · ScholarWorks (Central Washington University) · 2013

In this chapter, we give a brief overview of the use of data-based graphics in scientific research and the challenges involved in integrating this essential component of research into the classroom. We then give examples of how we use data-based graphics in our own research and attempt to overcome the challenges in our teaching. As a geoscientist (Egger) and environmental chemist (Carpi), our research tools and techniques differ, but we find common themes and conclude with recommendations for incorporating explicit teaching about data-based graphics into the undergraduate science classroom.
