Sound, Notes, and Harmonics

Richard Garfinkle, David Garfinkle · 2021

The mathematics of sound is examined, beginning with a discussion of Fourier analysis and the Fourier series and their origin in the study of heat. Analysis of vibrating strings and string instruments gives us the basic Fourier series. We then move on to drums and Bessel functions. The chapter concludes with a discussion of atoms and points toward quantum mechanics.
