Summary The frequency-domain finite difference methods can model wave attenuation and dispersion. But the computational memory and time costs for solving large matrix equation are prohibitive for large models and fine discretization of the models. We propose frequency-domain finite difference heterogeneous multiscale method (FDFD-HMM) for acoustic wave modelling. The method solves acoustic wave equation on coarse grids by incorporating fine-scale features in a coarsely gridded model, which reduces the dimension of the matrix equation so that a efficient direct solver can be applied to solve this equation. Numerical example shows that our method can effectively model wavefield induced by fine-scale features in the coarsely gridded models.
