Searchable encryption applications, challenges and future research directions

Brij Bhooshan Gupta, Mamta · 2021

This chapter discusses the critical research challenges encountered while designing searchable encryption schemes. It highlights the open challenges associated with searchable encryption and provided insights into future research directions in the field. Searchable encryption schemes have numerous applications in areas where the readers want both security of the data and accessibility to the data. Similar to the banking system, there is a large class of applications where searchable encryption can make a difference. Further, searchable encryption has applications in multiple domains like secure auditing of network and financial logs, privacy of health monitoring systems, remote data storage which are untrusted in nature and so on. Therefore, depending upon the application one should decide the functionalities that should be present in the searchable encryption scheme under consideration. However, there are some useful functionalities which, if added, can significantly improve the usability of the searchable encryption scheme.
