An Overview of Signal Processing Methods for Signal Source Localization

Cristina Popovici · Journal of Military Technology · 2020

The majority of modern applications require signal processing methods that can provide the expected results, such as signal source's position in space, based on the time delay between the received signals. The performance of each method varies according to the signal to noise ratio, the sampling frequency, or the type of signal, etc. This paper aims to present and compare several signal processing methods in an effort to determine the optimum solution for the localization of signal sources. Methods such as the Spectrogram, Wavelet Transform, Cross-Correlation or Recurrence Plot Analysis were simulated using Matlab software. The conclusion is that Cross-Correlation is the optimum method in real-time applications, in the case of a high sampling frequency, followed by Recurrence Plot Analysis.
