Wavelet Transform Applications for Hydrological Characterization

S Adarsh, M. Janga Reddy · 2021

This chapter presents the application of wavelet transforms for different types of characterization problems in hydrology. Extraction of the prominent features such as trend and periodicity is highly desirable for hydrologic predictions. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) can be used for the extraction of trends by coupling it with Sequential Mann Kendall (SQMK) test. The application of the DWT- SQMK coupled framework is demonstrated by determining the trend and dominant periodicity of postmonsoon rainfall of Kerala meteorological subdivision, India. The continuous variant of wavelet transform is a potential tool for the periodicity estimation and its extensions like wavelet coherence (WTC) and cross wavelet transform are useful in investigating the multiscale teleconnections between two candidate signals. This chapter presents the application of continuous wavelet transform for investigating the streamflow-sediment linkages of Kallada river in southern Kerala.
