Hilbert Huang Transform Applications for Characterization of Rainfall
S Adarsh, M. Janga Reddy · 2021
This chapter presents the application of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) for extraction of the nonlinear trend of rainfall. The application of Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) for the time-frequency characterization of Indian monsoon rainfall data is demonstrated in this chapter. The HHT based Time Dependent Intrinsic Correlation (TDIC) is a useful technique for multiscale correlation studies. This chapter proposes EMD/Multivariate EMD (MEMD) based TDIC frameworks for investigating hydro-climatic teleconnections. The proposed approach is applied for investigating the links of large-scale climatic oscillations and Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) in multiple time scales. MEMD can be coupled with scaling theory for developing the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves of rainfall. Based on this proposed approach, IDF curves of different locations in Kerala meteorological subdivision in India are developed.
