There are many reasons why organizations elect to install new telephone systems. Visible failures (such as losing dial tone during business hours) or frustrations experienced by senior management may serve as the engine of change. Other motivations include the transition to IP telephony or the need to serve a new market that requires call center capabilities (a wholesaler may elect to serve the retail market as well). Regardless of the initial impetus for a new system, the months spent in selecting vendors, services, and equipment are an excellent opportunity to define needs and develop a coherent telephony architecture.
