Focusing on delay performance of the dropped packets reaching the maximum number of transmission attempts in DCF mechanism, we propose a model of dropped packet time for large node number of WLANs. We present a state transition diagram with the maximum number of transmission attempts and analyze the probability of dropped packets. With the conditional collision probability, we give durations of a single dropped packet. Due to experiencing all stages of data transmission processes, any dropped packets have the same average durations. Combined with the probability and average durations of a dropped packet, we can calculate the average time of dropped packets. The simulation results confirm the validity and accuracy of the proposed model of the dropped packet time.
