A key capability of fifth generation (5G) system is service exposure which enables programmable networks to address the diverse requirements of diverse use cases and applications. Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) which provides a computing environment and storage capabilities for operator's and third-party applications exposes network contextual and location information in the vicinity of end users and enables user traffic handling. In this paper, the MEC potential to expose core network functionality for policy control is studied. The focus is on MEC-based Application Programming Interface (API) for application detection and control. The proposed API is described by typical use cases, information flows and data types. The API feasibility is demonstrated by state models which are formally described and verified.
