One of the foremost concerns in wireless sensor network (WSN) is energy management of the tiny nodes set up for monitoring environmental or physical conditions of an area. Hierarchical routing such as LEACH is an effectual methodology, in which cluster have been structured however choosing an energy-sensible cluster by optimally selection of cluster head (CH) is also very challenging. Selection of CH is an optimization problem hence optimization algorithms would serve the purpose. One of optimization technique is particle swarm optimization (PSO) that is originated from swarm intelligence. In present paper, PSO based LEACH algorithm is tested comprehensively on numerous scenarios of WSN, which are varying number of sensor nodes (n), and maximum rounds (rmax). Several parameters have been considered as the base of the study to reflect useful results in evaluating performance of PSO based LEACH in assorted scenarios of WSN. It leads to interesting findings. A variety of performance metrics such as dead nodes (DN) per round, alive nodes (AL) per round, packet to CH per round, packet to base station (BS) per round, throughput and average residual energy are considered for performance evaluation. Results have been shown using MATLAB.
