Separation of Multiple Sound Sources in the Same Direction by Instantaneous Spectral Estimation

This project aims to separate sound sources in the same direction using a small array of microphones arranged on an arc. When the output pattern of instantaneous sound pressures from the array is regarded as an image, the center of the arc is a singular point because its two-dimensional frequency components are concentrated in the spatial direct current (DC) bin. Based on this property, the noise spectral DC components are estimated by solving simultaneous equations. Computer simulation experiments demonstrated that a 6-cm array achieved a clear separation of three sound sources with the signal-to-distortion ratio of about 20 dB.
