Combined Architectures of Denoising Filter and Local Binary Patterns Feature Extraction

This paper implemented combined architectures of denoising filter and feature extraction, which can be run simultaneously. Median filter and hybrid median filter are used for denoising images. Local binary patterns are used for extracting features. Both operations can be operated on the same cycle using the parallel and pipelined design to improve the performance of the edge computing side. Because the two denoising filters have different operations, the hardware resource utilization of the two combined architectures has been compared on FPGA implementations. The circuit of using hybrid median filter achieves nearly half of the hardware resources of the median filter.
