Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consisting of many miniature nodes equipped with a low-power transceiver, a microprocessor, and a sensor, the so-called motes, have become widespread in many areas due to the possibility of deploying a network in complicated conditions, its self-organization, the lack of hardware communication, and the minimum size of sensors. The ways to build a network are extremely different and are chosen depending on many factors. Mathematical simulation, e.g., agent-oriented one allows estimating the WSN quality when using any communication protocol to build it. Among the variety of existing clustering protocols, the paper describes simulation and analysis of four hierarchical clustering protocols with nonuniform distribution of nodes, one protocol with a uniform node distribution, and one hybrid protocol LEACH, SEP, TEEN, DDEEC, PEGASIS, and EAMMH. Based on the simulation results obtained, a comparative analysis of the efficiency has been performed for the protocols when applied in various (homogeneous and heterogeneous) sensor networks. The operation quality has been estimated by parameters such as the duration of the sensor network stable functioning period, residual energy, and the time before the death of the first and last sensor nodes. The simulation results allow recommending the TEEN protocol for use in both homogeneous and heterogeneous networks.
