Perspectives and Foundations of Swarm Intelligence and its Application
Rashmi Agrawal · 2020
Swarm intelligence (SI) is the cooperative behavior of self-organized, decentralized systems which may be natural or artificial. Examples of SI include the nest-building of social insects, cooperative transportation, group foraging of social insects, and collective cataloging and grouping. Ant colony optimization, bee-inspired algorithms, particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization, firefly algorithms, fish swarm optimization, and many more are SI algorithms. Optimization methods have grown over the time to unravel many engineering problems of variable complexity. Hence, this is an emerging area of scientific research. Optimization using SI is used to solve many engineering problems now days. Optimization tools are exploited to assist optimal decision-making in the development, strategy, and operation of major systems. Primarily, optimization encompasses systematically selecting solutions from permissible set of decision variables for maximizing the repayment and minimizing the fatalities. The objective of this chapter is to discuss some bio-mimicry algorithms and their applications.
