Modality and the plurality of logics
Otávio Bueno · 2020
Modality, the realm of the possible and the necessary, has played a significant role in the study of logical consequence. This chapter discusses the role of modality in current debates in the foundations of logic. In the background, two families of views regarding the metaphysics of modality are relevant. The chapter examines the role of modality and of modalism in the examination of logical consequence. It considers logical pluralism, the view according to which there is a plurality of logical consequence relations (a plurality of logics); different logics are adequate to different domains, and, in some cases, several logics are adequate to the same domain. One of the most salient features of logic from the twentieth century on is the plurality of non-classical logics, such as constructive, paraconsistent, and quantum logics, among others. There are different ways of conceptualizing a logical space. The chapter concludes that the combination of both modalism and logical pluralism provides an attractive, integrated view.
