Soil investigation campaign at Limelette (Belgium): Results
Gauthier Van Alboom, Valérie Whenham · 2020
A site characterised by sandy soil condition was selected for the second phase of the research project on Soil Displacement Screw Piles. An extensive soil investigation campaign was conducted on the site. As in Belgium the design of piles is almost uniquely based on cone penetration tests (CPT) results, a large number of CPT were performed. In addition to standard electrical CPT-E, a series of extra tests with various types of mechanical cones were carried out by different companies, in order to investigate the influence of cone type. To be able to evaluate pile design methods used abroad, also other types of in situ tests such as Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Menard Pressuremeter Test (PMT) and Marchetti Dilatometer Tests (DMT) were carried out. To provide dynamic soil characteristics, seismic tests were performed. Finally, a boring with undisturbed sampling was executed in order to define through laboratory tests the physical and mechanical properties of the soil. This paper gives an overview of the soil investigation with emphasis on the CPT results.
